What can damage your skin barrier?

The skin barrier is a bit like a warm coat in cold weather: if it's damaged or too thin, you're more likely to feel "cold" and unprotected. A weakened barrier can lead to irritation, dryness, and even the development of eczema and acne.

The top layer of the epidermis is a thin but strong protective layer made up of sweat, sebum, fatty acids, cermides and dead skin cells. This hydrolipidic layer helps to retain moisture in the skin, prevents pathogens from entering, and protects it from environmental influences. But what happens when this protective layer is damaged, and what can cause it?

Several factors can weaken your skin's natural protective barrier:

  • Over-cleansing: If you wash your face with harsh, foaming, sulfate-based cleansers or soap, you strip your skin of its natural oils. This can damage your barrier and lead to the aforementioned irritation, tightness, dryness, and even acne.
  • Cold and windy weather: The weather can also take a toll on your skin's protective layer, especially in the fall and winter. Cold, windy weather can easily dry out your skin and make it more sensitive. That's why it's even more important to pay attention to strengthening your barrier.
  • Alcohol and fragrances: Products containing alcohol or strong fragrances can also damage the protective layer.
  • Over-exfoliation and actives: If you notice that your favorite moisturizer starts to sting your skin overnight, you may already suspect that your barrier is damaged. This can be caused by over-exfoliation or scrubbing, as well as piling on active ingredients.
  • Stress and poor nutrition: All of these negatively affect the condition of the skin, making it more susceptible to irritation, inflammation, and various skin diseases.

You can learn what to do if you want to strengthen your skin's protective layer in the continuation of the article!
